The Sinai Covenant

The Sinai covenant is found in Exodus 19-24.

Exodus 24:7

And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.

Exodus 19:-6

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Expansion of the Sinai covenant in D&C 84

D&C 84:23-25

23 Now this Moses plainly taught to the children of Israel in the wilderness, and sought diligently to sanctify his people that they might behold the face of God;

24 But they hardened their hearts and could not endure his presence; therefore, the Lord in his wrath, for his anger was kindled against them, swore that they should not enter into his rest while in the wilderness, which rest is the fulness of his glory.

25 Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst, and the Holy Priesthood also;

Moses, as the intermediary between Jehovah and collective Israel

Exodus 24:3

And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do.

The sequence of Up and Down in Exodus 19, established the gap between Jehovah and Israel and the need for a mediator (Moses):

  • Up 19:3 and Down 19:7
  • Up 19:8 and Down 9:14
  • Up 19:20 and Down 19:25

The purpose was to create 3 boundaries delimiting the following:

  1. Divine purpose (Exodus 19:3-8)
  2. Preparation to meet Yahweh (Exodus 19:9-15)
  3. Actual Theophany, meeting the Lord (Exodus 19:16-25)

Revelation 1:5-6 NIV

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.
